Art is so Subjective!

After a much needed break, I am back at it and painting more than ever.

During my time away from paint brushes and multi-colored smudges on my arms and jeans, I have thought a lot about how I can make my art better... How can I make my work stand out more?

I have realized, art is... subjective. People either like it, or they don't.

I've encountered many pieces of art that I'm not particularly fond of. But, that doesn't mean much. Someone else may come across the exact same piece and think "this is the most amazing thing I have ever seen."

Yep. Subjective.

Being an artist can be difficult. Especially if you are trying to make a living at it. Attempting to make art for people you don't know... It's tough. I have tried my hand at dozens of different "types" of art, with the intention of selling it. I've done woodwork, personalized items, fabric crafts (hand bags and such), clothing, and other kinds of functional art. I recently started painting on light switch plates - but, haven't tried to sell any yet. At the end of the day, I am often surprised at what sells and what gets continuously passed by. A constant reminder that everyone's tastes are different. Everyone's favorite colors, favorite themes and patterns are all different and sometimes change with the passing seasons.

I'll admit, this is sometimes a challenging concept for me. I want everyone to love everything I make, because.. I love it and they should, too. Darn it! (I'm totally kidding.) But, it can be frustrating.

So, today, my advice to all budding artists (and myself): Keep going. Don't get too frustrated when, what you think to be, your best piece doesn't get a lot of attention right away. The right person just hasn't seen it yet.

Cheers! Have a great day!
